Key Hazard

The biggest risks come from where and how you charge your phone, not the charging itself. Here's what causes problems:

The Real Dangers of Sleeping Next to a Charging Phone

Sleeping next to a charging phone is not generally safe, but the main risks come from improper charging habits that can cause overheating or fire hazards. Dangerous situations include charging a phone under a pillow, on a bed, under blankets, or on soft surfaces that block airflow and trap heat. Damaged or cheap charging cables and chargers also increase the risk of electrical faults.

Modern smartphones stop charging at 100%, so overcharging is not the issue. The concern is heat buildup during overnight charging, especially when ventilation is poor. Excess heat can damage the phone, melt materials, or even start fires.

Safety Remnders

To charge safely overnight:

  • Place the phone on a hard, flat surface like a nightstand.
  • Keep it at least about 3 feet (1 meter) away from where you sleep
  • Ensure good airflow and avoid covering the phone.
  • Remove thick phone cases, if possible, to reduce heat retention.
  • Use only certified or manufacturer-approved chargers and cables.
  • Regularly inspect cables for fraying or damage.
  • Never:

  • Charge a phone under your pillow or blankets.
  • Charge it directly on a bed or couch.
  • Sleep with the phone pressed against your body.
  • Use damaged or low-quality charging accessories.
  • Safe charging habits significantly reduce the risk of overheating, fire, and equipment damage.
